Our Experiential Graphic 91ÊÓƵ Team played a crucial role in defining the center’s visual identity, creating impactful interior graphics, signage, and an eye-catching exterior mural that wraps around the building’s façade. The centerpiece of this design is a bold and celebratory mural, using vivid Pride flag colors to symbolize LGBTQ+ visibility, resilience, and empowerment. This striking artwork pays tribute to trailblazing LGBTQ+ figures who shaped history, including Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, Frida Kahlo, Marsha P. Johnson, and Harvey Milk. Their portraits, while recognizable, have been artistically abstracted to invite viewers to see themselves reflected in the mural – reinforcing the idea that every individual has a place within the LGBTQ+ community. This powerful public art piece not only honors LGBTQ+ history and diversity but also delivers a clear message of inclusion, representation, and acceptance. As the focal point of the Greater Whittier LGBTQ+ Center, the mural serves as a visual symbol of pride and unity, welcoming all who seek support, connection, and celebration within a space designed for them.

An Inclusive and Affirming Space
Inside, the interior design seamlessly extends the themes of the exterior, reinforcing the symbolism and significance of the LGBTQ+ Pride flag colors. From the moment visitors step through the doors, they are welcomed into a vibrant and inviting reception area, thoughtfully designed to reduce anxiety and foster a sense of comfort for those seeking support and connection. A key feature of the center is the small group counseling room, which incorporates a custom privacy-enhancing glass graphic. This design element ensures that counseling sessions remain confidential and secure, creating a safe, affirming space for open discussions and healing. In addition to its thoughtful layout, the center integrates educational and inspirational elements into its wayfinding system. The Experiential Graphic 91ÊÓƵ Team developed custom room signage that spotlights influential figures from both the LGBTQ+ community and Greater Whittier. Each sign features a historical photo and a brief biography, transforming everyday navigation into an opportunity for education, reflection, and representation. More than just a physical space, the Greater Whittier LGBTQ+ Center is designed to actively support and uplift those who walk through its doors. By fostering an environment that is safe, inclusive, and empowering, the center encourages individuals to seek support, build meaningful connections, and embrace their authentic selves. The intentionality behind every design choice ensures that the center is not just a place for resources – but a place to thrive.

Addressing a Critical Need
Before the center’s establishment, LGBTQ+ individuals in southeastern Los Angeles County lacked access to essential services within their own community. To bridge this gap, we collaborated with the Los Angeles County Internal Service Department to renovate a 1960s County Probation office into a vibrant, welcoming space dedicated to comprehensive LGBTQ+ support services. In partnership with the L.A. Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the center now offers support groups that foster a sense of belonging and shared experience, including substance use disorder treatment; mental health services; legal assistance; age-appropriate youth programs; educational workshops; and information and referral services. The Greater Whittier LGBTQ+ Community Center not only provides essential services but also offers cultural programs, social events, community outreach, and volunteer opportunities. The Center includes facilities such as showers, washers, dryers, and a closet filled with donated clothes, shoes, and gender affirming items to support all those who seek assistance including individuals who are unhoused or have unstable housing.
